EMDR THERAPY

At Evergreen Psychotherapy, I use a specialised approach called Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma therapy.

tHE EFFECTS OF TRAUMA

Trauma can stop you feeling like yourself anymore, as if you have ‘lost yourself’. This is due to traumatic memories being stuck and unprocessed, in both your brain and in your body.

If you have experienced trauma - either a single traumatic event such as a road traffic accident, medical procedure, disaster, an assault (sexual, violent) or indeed more complex and long-term trauma such as abuse, relationship difficulties, bereavement – you can find yourself trapped between feeling ‘too much’, overwhelmed/flooded or ‘too little’, shut down/numb/empty.

Stuck and unprocessed memories can manifest in our daily lives as low self-esteem, being constantly on edge, anxious, suffering panic attacks, a lack of focus, depression, flashbacks, suicidal thoughts, unable to sleep, bad dreams, nightmares, and difficulties with food. These are all symptoms of trauma.

If left untreated, this can develop into more serious disorders such as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and other complex and long-term disorders.

Traumatic memories are stored in a way that leaves you feeling some safety but still troubled. Talking about and exploring these memories is not always clinically appropriate, and in some cases it can even increase a person’s difficulties.

A TRAUMA-FOCUSED APPROACH USING EMDR

I use an attachment informed trauma-focused approach called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) for trauma therapy at Evergreen Psychotherapy.

Using methods of bilateral/dual attention stimulation, EMDR allows your stuck traumatic memories to be processed, freeing your mind and body to become more integrated. You still remember the event, but it no longer holds significant emotional charge!

One of the benefits with EMDR is that the process can be quicker and gentler than standard psychotherapy, without you having to talk about or dwell on the traumatic memory.

Information.png
  • EMDR is one of the most significant recently developed treatments for trauma, traumatic experiences, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and is supported and recommended by both NICE UK and the WHO.

  • EMDR is also proven to be very effective for many other psychological areas including dealing with bereavement, phobias, general anxiety, anger, low self-esteem, and depression.

  • An Attachment-Informed (AI) approach to EMDR therapy is about understanding and working with the idea of how you came to be this way you are today. Many difficult and traumatic memories, are likely to be rooted in our early-life experiences of secure and insecure attachment relationships in childhood, and the presence or usually absence of emotional repair to when big and small things went wrong. AI-EMDR is less focused on the detail of what actually happened, but more on the individual meaning you and your autonomic nervous system has made of these stories/events over time as well as changing and repairing that narrative in a soothing and comforting way that works for you.

WHAT MY CLIENTS SAY

  • I came to see Jette wanting to explore my past trauma and change behaviours which were making me feel frustrated and very low, such as fierce anger, no compassion for myself and an inability to create deep relationships with people. The EMDR therapy was an interesting process, Jette has some brilliant tools and technology to help with this, along with being patient, encouraging and kind. I processed a lot of primal feelings and got to befriend the younger version of myself. The impact of this has been fundamental in changing the way I behave. I’m not as quick to anger, but when I am triggered, I now have strategies to help me change the outcome for the better. It’s a true-life changing experience if you’re willing to put your trust in Jette and commit to the work. I’m very grateful that I did.

Female, 45. In person and online sessions.

  • I approached Jette to address specific issues through EMDR. From the very beginning, I felt comfortable with Jette because of her warm and professional manner. Working with Jette enabled me to strengthen my own self-awareness and foster more self-compassion and helped me through a very difficult time of divorce. I understand my nervous system much better and this has helped with my own self regulation, which in turn has helped me be a more present, patient and loving parent to my daughter. I can't recommend Jette highly enough.

  • I attended multiple sessions with Jette to help deal with my anxiety and depression, as well as a recent traumatic experience that exacerbated those issues. We did both talk therapy and EMDR and Jette helped me enormously with what were debilitating symptoms. She taught me tools to self-regulate my feelings of anxiety and panic, and used EMDR to help me work through a traumatising medical incident that I was struggling to cope with. I found Jette very supportive, patient and kind – I would not hesitate to recommend her as a therapist.

  • I was previously in therapy for a few years, but felt I needed deeper exploration into past traumas. In my search for EMDR, I came across Evergreen Psychotherapy and felt immediately comfortable with Jette. Although our work was online, I did not find this was a barrier in any way, and during my time with Jette, I was able to safely work through past traumas. I believe I have healed significantly during this process and recognise the importance of self-care in my daily life. I can not thank Jette enough for being a part of my healing journey.
