EMDR THERAPY
At Evergreen Psychotherapy, I use a specialised approach called Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma therapy.

tHE EFFECTS OF TRAUMA
Trauma can stop you feeling like yourself anymore, as if you have ‘lost yourself’. This is due to traumatic memories being stuck and unprocessed, in both your brain and in your body.
If you have experienced trauma - either a single traumatic event such as a road traffic accident, medical procedure, disaster, an assault (sexual, violent) or indeed more complex and long-term trauma such as abuse, relationship difficulties, bereavement – you can find yourself trapped between feeling ‘too much’, overwhelmed/flooded or ‘too little’, shut down/numb/empty.
Stuck and unprocessed memories can manifest in our daily lives as low self-esteem, being constantly on edge, anxious, suffering panic attacks, a lack of focus, depression, flashbacks, suicidal thoughts, unable to sleep, bad dreams, nightmares, and difficulties with food. These are all symptoms of trauma.
If left untreated, this can develop into more serious disorders such as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and other complex and long-term disorders.
Traumatic memories are stored in a way that leaves you feeling some safety but still troubled. Talking about and exploring these memories is not always clinically appropriate, and in some cases it can even increase a person’s difficulties.

A TRAUMA-FOCUSED APPROACH USING EMDR
I use an attachment informed trauma-focused approach called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) for trauma therapy at Evergreen Psychotherapy.
Using methods of bilateral/dual attention stimulation, EMDR allows your stuck traumatic memories to be processed, freeing your mind and body to become more integrated. You still remember the event, but it no longer holds significant emotional charge!
One of the benefits with EMDR is that the process can be quicker and gentler than standard psychotherapy, without you having to talk about or dwell on the traumatic memory.
EMDR is one of the most significant recently developed treatments for trauma, traumatic experiences, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and is supported and recommended by both NICE UK and the WHO.
EMDR is also proven to be very effective for many other psychological areas including dealing with bereavement, phobias, general anxiety, anger, low self-esteem, and depression.
An Attachment-Informed (AI) approach to EMDR therapy is about understanding and working with the idea of how you came to be this way you are today. Many difficult and traumatic memories, are likely to be rooted in our early-life experiences of secure and insecure attachment relationships in childhood, and the presence or usually absence of emotional repair to when big and small things went wrong. AI-EMDR is less focused on the detail of what actually happened, but more on the individual meaning you and your autonomic nervous system has made of these stories/events over time as well as changing and repairing that narrative in a soothing and comforting way that works for you.
